Berlin (dts) - The Federal Government's Human Rights Commissioner, Luise Amtberg (Greens), is pushing to create exchange options for the Ukrainian national currency, the hryvnia, in Germany for refugees from Ukraine. “We are aware that there is a problem here,” she told the “Editorial Network Germany” (Thursday editions). “We have to make sure the money can be exchanged.”

This is still possible for smaller amounts. However, with larger amounts it is “difficult because the currency has suffered a certain loss in value and a lot of collateral, such as houses, has been destroyed.” The problem must be solved at a European level. “Because we’re not the only ones who have it. Poland, for example, has much more. This is not something that stops at our borders.” The European Central Bank must take care of it, demanded the Green politician. “Discussions are already being held about this.” Thuringia’s Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (Left) told the RND: “The Ukrainian currency is practically worthless here. Because German banks don't accept them." He therefore advocated giving every refugee from Ukraine who comes into the country with Ukrainian money a minimum of 200 or 500 euros so that it is not completely worthless. A spokeswoman for the German Bundesbank told RND: “European governments are looking for a solution. We'll have to wait and see.” According to RND, it is internal discussions in the EU Commission that have so far prevented a solution. The member states are “probably prepared to cover the risk with a guarantee,” it is said.
