Schwerin/Mainz (dts) – Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) was deeply moved by the announced resignation of her Rhineland-Palatinate counterpart Malu Dreyer (SPD).

"I am sad about this announcement. Malu Dreyer and I have worked closely together for many years," Schwesig told the "Rheinische Post" (Thursday edition). "One special time that connects us is the joint provisional SPD party chairmanship. We have always worked very well together and got on very well from the start," said Schwesig.

Malu Dreyer can be very proud of what she has achieved over the last ten years as Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate. "For me, Malu Dreyer is above all a wonderfully warm-hearted person and a good friend. I am very grateful for her personal support and many encouraging words during my cancer illness. And I found it incredibly brave how she dealt with her own illness in public. I will miss Malu Dreyer as Prime Minister, but she will remain as a friend," said Schwesig.

But she is also looking forward to working with Dreyer's successor, Alexander Schweitzer. "I have known him for a long time and I respect him. He will do a good job," said Schwesig.
