Berlin (dts) - After the attack on the Saxon SPD's top candidate for the European elections, Matthias Ecke, over 100 politicians condemned the escalating violence. In the “Striesen Declaration,” which “Spiegel” reports on, they commit to “respectful interaction” among democrats and to protecting each other from physical attacks.

In addition to the traffic light party leaders Lars Klingbeil and Saskia Esken (both SPD), Ricarda Lang (Greens), the signatories also include the left-wing leaders Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan as well as the Thuringian Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow, the Saxon CDU politician Marco Wanderwitz and the FDP -Faction vice-chairman Konstantin Kuhle. AfD politicians have not yet signed the declaration.

The letter was initiated by the organization “Brand New Bundestag”. Their goal is to promote non-partisan cooperation. The declaration bears the name of the Dresden district of Striesen. Ecke was attacked and seriously injured while posting posters there at the weekend. He had to be treated in hospital and operated on.
