Wiesbaden (dts) - Hesse's Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU) defended the debate within the CDU on how to deal with Islam and the corresponding passage in the basic program.

“It is right that we talk about Islam. I am glad that we as a Union are once again formulating clear positions on this,” said the CDU politician to the “Editorial Network Germany”. “This is a great achievement of Friedrich Merz.”

There was a dispute in the CDU about a specific sentence while the new basic program was being drawn up. Originally it was supposed to read: “Muslims who share our values belong to Germany.” The new sentence is: “An Islam that does not share our values and rejects our free society does not belong to Germany.” Both formulations are criticized by Islamic associations .

Rhein praised the passages: "I think both formulations are good because the message is the same: 'Everyone who shares our values can belong to us.'" The CDU again needs clear language that people can understand, warned Rhein.
